Understanding ABA Therapy

Q: What is ABA therapy?
A: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science-based approach that helps individuals learn new skills and reduce challenging behaviors. ABA focuses on teaching meaningful, everyday skills such as communication, social interaction, self-care, and coping strategies through positive reinforcement and data-driven methods.

Q: How does ABA help children with autism?
A: ABA breaks skills into small, manageable steps and uses structured teaching and positive support to help children learn. It’s tailored to each child’s strengths and needs, helping improve communication, independence, and confidence.

Q: Is ABA only for children with autism?
A: While ABA is most often used to support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), it can benefit anyone who needs help learning new skills, building routines, or improving behavior.

Getting Started

Q: How do I begin services?
A: Start by contacting our office. We’ll schedule an intake meeting to learn more about your child’s needs, review insurance or funding options, and arrange an assessment with one of our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs).

Q: What happens during the assessment?
A: Your child’s BCBA will conduct a comprehensive evaluation using tools like the VB-MAPP or ABLLS-R. This helps us understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and learning style. Based on these results, we’ll create a customized treatment plan with clear goals.

Q: How long does it take to start therapy?
A: The timeline varies based on insurance approval and scheduling availability, but most families begin services within a few weeks after the assessment is complete.

During Therapy

Q: What does a typical ABA session look like?
A: Each session is tailored to your child’s goals. Sessions may include structured learning, play-based activities, social interaction, and skill practice. Our therapists use positive reinforcement to encourage success and keep therapy fun.

Q: How many hours per week will my child receive therapy?
A: Therapy intensity depends on your child’s individual needs and goals.. Your BCBA will recommend the best schedule for meaningful progress.

Q: Where does therapy take place?
A: Most of our services are provided in-clinic at Wolff & Phan Autism Center, allowing for focused learning and access to specialized materials. We also work closely with families to generalize skills at home and in community settings when appropriate.

The Therapy Team
Q: Who provides ABA therapy?
A: ABA sessions are led by Behavior Technicians under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Your BCBA designs your child’s treatment plan, monitors progress, and provides regular updates.

Q: How often is therapy supervised?
A: Your BCBA will observe sessions frequently, make data-based adjustments, and meet with you regularly to discuss progress and next steps.

Family Involvement

Q: How can parents support therapy at home?
A: Parent involvement is key to success! We offer family guidance sessions to discuss strategies you can use at home and in daily routines to support consistency and growth.
Q: Can I observe my child’s sessions?
A: Absolutely. We encourage open communication and collaboration. Parents are welcome to observe sessions as discussed with their BCBA during parent guidance sessions.
Q: Will I receive updates on progress?
A: Yes. This is communicated during parent guidance sessions, which can be scheduled weekly to monthly, as agreed upon between the family and the BCBA.

Goals & Transitions

Q: How long will my child need ABA therapy?
A: Every child’s journey is different. The length of therapy depends on individual goals, progress, and readiness for transition.
Q: What happens when my child meets their goals?
A: When your child has mastered their goals and can maintain progress independently, we’ll develop a transition plan, whether that means reducing hours, supporting school readiness, or graduation from services.
